Author's purpose
Ted Dekker, the author of the Circle Trilogy, has been through internal conflicts that have affected his books in interesting, metaphorical ways for his own life and for the lives of more than a few significant figures in the Bible throughout many time periods. Ted Dekker has been called a Christian novelist, but he says otherwise. In his own words he explains that he wants to appeal to everyone ilustrated by his reason--"If I go to Seattle and say, “I’m a Christian,” it means something different than if I go to Texas and say, “I’m a Christian." However, he later said it does not matter anymore and whatever you think about his work is fine with him. One of the internal conflicts he encountered was as he put it, "The more successful that I became in the world’s eyes, the more miserable I became in spirit. I entered into a place of pretty significant suffering." This is reflected in the Circle Trilogy because the main character is also a novelist although an unsuccessful one, but when he is world renowned it is not for his writing and he has two worlds of stress bearing down on him (nytimes).
Author Character comparison
I think Ted Dekker is most like the main character, Thomas Hunter, for a few reasons. First they both have an interest in writing as I said before. The both had family in the field of ministry, Thomas' father, a pastor, and Ted's mother and father, missionaries. Thomas and Ted were both born in Indonesia and moved to the U.S. They also have large imaginations which is why Thomas goes on this adeventure and how Ted entertained himself when he was young.
Characters and plot
Thomas Hunter starts out as just another guy in the world but eventually transforms into a general
